Situated on the Yellow River at the heart of Lanzhou, the Lanzhou Landmark Tower is envisioned as a new cultural icon and catalyst for urban regeneration in China’s northwest. The tower’s form draws inspiration from the flowing ribbons of traditional Chinese dance, the geomorphology of the surrounding mountains, and the mythic imagery of the Yellow River dragon. Bridging both banks of the river, the tower integrates observation decks, a rotating restaurant, sky gardens, and civic amenities while forming a continuous urban promenade that links existing parks with a newly programmed island landscape. Sustainability and innovation drive the design—from solar-scaled façades and smog-eating titanium dioxide cladding to wind turbines and river-based energy strategies—positioning the tower as both a symbol of ecological aspiration and civic identity.

The tower’s twisting geometry emerges from a base of fluid urban fabric, ascending with a spiraling rhythm that echoes both natural topography and the historical movement of people and trade.

Positioned at the meeting point of river, parkland, and city, the tower is conceived as a catalyst for ecological and recreational renewal, drawing the landscape into its urban base.
